Release 8.0.0-pre.20240226.1 (2024-03-05)

Baseline: 9d34f8ab0f1ffb18900feaeb23cb16c93f4e0139

Cherry picks:

   + 702118bc527d25c6a82625f2cce02a350ec18239:
     Remove --host_jvm_args=-Djava.net.preferIPv6Addresses=true

Incompatible changes:

  - Coverage report generators don't get anymore the JAVA_RUNFILES
    and PYTHON_RUNFILES environment variables.
  - apple_cc_toolchain rule was removed, use regular cc_toolchain
  - "bazel query" and "bazel print_action" can't run under the output
    base anymore.
  - The Starlark methods copts, generate_linkmap, should_strip_binary
in objc fragment have been deleted. Please use the equivalent
    methods
    objccopts, objc_generate_linkmap, objc_should_strip_binary in cpp
    fragments
    instead.

New features:

  - Bazel now respects `expires` from Credential Helpers.

Important changes:

  - Added a new method, `repository_ctx.watch()`, which asks Bazel to
watch for changes to an arbitrary file. When said file changes,
    Bazel will refetch the repo.
  - `genrule` now supports setting `stamp = -1` to request
conditional stamping (based on the value of the build's `--stamp`
    flag).

Bazel

{Fast, Correct} - Choose two

Build and test software of any size, quickly and reliably.

  • Speed up your builds and tests: Bazel rebuilds only what is necessary. With advanced local and distributed caching, optimized dependency analysis and parallel execution, you get fast and incremental builds.

  • One tool, multiple languages: Build and test Java, C++, Android, iOS, Go, and a wide variety of other language platforms. Bazel runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

  • Scalable: Bazel helps you scale your organization, codebase, and continuous integration solution. It handles codebases of any size, in multiple repositories or a huge monorepo.

  • Extensible to your needs: Easily add support for new languages and platforms with Bazel's familiar extension language. Share and re-use language rules written by the growing Bazel community.
